Lots of people struggle with what kind of flooring to put down in a mid-century-modern house. When we bought our house and renovated it in 2006, we decided to go with vinyl composition tile -- some people call it commercial vinyl tile, others call it vinyl commercial tile, VCT, CVT. It's basically the same stuff we all remember from school. One of the coolest things about it: There are scores of colors and limitless color combinations. (We had asked the installers to use a random pattern, but, as with so many things that happened during the renovation, he wasn't really listening ...)
I had to share these pics with you to show you how great it can look when it's stripped, waxed and buffed. We use a company called Jackson Quality Janitorial here in Fort Worth. We didn't get any kind of price break for sharing this info., we just like the work they did. And Lewis Jackson is hands down one of the nicest guys we've ever had cross our MCM threshold.

Wow. Does this bring back memories. My family gameroom was done with this tile in the 60's. Somehow it has such a timeless feel to it though. So less commercial looking and just naturally beautiful.
Beautiful floor! Where did you find the tile? My daughter and son-in-law have a 1952 home in Oakhurst, and they have mentioned wanting vinyl tile.
Wow, we are lame at replies. If it's not too late, Dana, we ordered it from a flooring store in Weatherford. (We had a bad experience with the store's owner, re: an issue with the tilework in our shower.) But any shop that sells and installs flooring can help you. It's Armstrong; the best part was getting to choose from a million colors. I saw a very high-end modern home in a magazine that went with commercial vinyl tile in all white. It looked amazing -- all polished and gleaming. They sell Armstrong vinyl tile in all the big-box stores, too, I think.
Thanks for the info! It's nice to meet another DFW blogger. Maybe our paths will cross one day.
I like the floor. What colors did you use? It is hard to tell exactly for the photo. Looks great! We want to use those colors in an old Airstream we are remodeling. Thanks, Brett
